Narrative
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 495 near Exit 36 in Plainville, Massachusetts, in which a car overturned and caught fire with two occupants trapped inside. Off-duty Ashland Fire Lt. David Iarussi, who was passing the scene while returning from a wedding in Rhode Island, stopped and used a rock to break the vehicle’s windshield, successfully pulling both a female passenger and a male occupant to safety with the assistance of bystanders and Massachusetts State Police troopers.
Both trapped occupants were rescued before the fire could claim their lives; no update on their conditions was available at the time of reporting. The vehicle sustained severe damage as a result of the rollover and subsequent fire.
The cause of the single-vehicle crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police. Full details are developing.
