Narrative
In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 20, 2026, at approximately 12:43 a.m., Massachusetts State Police attempted to stop a vehicle on the Massachusetts Turnpike westbound in the Millbury area. The driver initially pulled over but fled as a trooper approached, prompting a BOLO alert. Troopers subsequently spotted the suspect vehicle traveling the wrong way on Route 146, heading southbound in the northbound lanes.
Despite efforts by troopers to stop the vehicle — including the deployment of stop sticks — the wrong-way driver crashed head-on into another passenger vehicle near the on and off-ramps at Exit 17. The wrong-way driver, a Connecticut man in his 20s, died as a result of his injuries. The driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. All lanes on Route 146 were reopened at approximately 4:30 a.m.
Massachusetts State Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, and no further identifying details have been released. Full details are developing.
