Narrative
On Saturday, May 23, 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a fatal collision occurred at the Grove Street Crossing on West Street in Braintree, Massachusetts, when a 58-year-old man driving a black Jeep Cherokee intentionally drove around the activated crossing guard as an MBTA Commuter Rail train was approaching. All safety warnings, including the crossing gates and safety arms, had been fully deployed at the time of the incident.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was pronounced dead at the scene; his identity has not been released. The 74 passengers aboard the train were uninjured and were transported by bus to continue to their destinations. Grove Street in Braintree and West Street in Weymouth were closed for approximately four hours during the investigation.
