Narrative

Just before midnight on Saturday, June 28, 2026, Massachusetts State Police say 81-year-old Antone Carvalho of Somerset entered I-93 North at Exit 15B and drove southbound in the northbound lanes, triggering two separate crashes on Interstate 93 in Boston before Exit 15A.

A Honda Odyssey and an Audi A4 first crashed while attempting to avoid Carvalho’s oncoming Cadillac Escalade; all four family members in the Honda were transported to a Boston-area hospital. Moments later, Carvalho’s vehicle collided head-on with a Chevy Cruze driven by a Haverhill man in his 20s, who was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries. Carvalho was also hospitalized and is expected to be issued a court summons. The Suffolk County District Attorney noted that impairment was not identified as an apparent factor.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating, and the identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released. Full details are developing.
