Narrative

At approximately 2:35 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2026, a massive chain-reaction crash occurred on Interstate 95 southbound in Stafford County, Virginia, approximately 45 miles south of Washington, D.C. As traffic slowed for a work zone, a tour bus driven by Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, failed to reduce speed and struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which was then forced into an Acura SUV and several nearby vehicles, ultimately involving at least eight vehicles in total.

Five people were killed in the crash: four members of a family from Greenfield, Massachusetts — a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy — who were inside the Acura SUV when it caught fire, as well as Priscilla R. Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts, who was in the Suburban. An additional 44 people were hospitalized, including three in critical condition.

Bus driver Jing S. Dong has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter with additional charges pending; he remains hospitalized and is being held without bond. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating potential factors including driver fatigue, impairment, mechanical issues, and work zone conditions. Full details are developing.
