Narrative
On Thursday, May 29, 2026, a deadly multi-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 81 near Lexington, Virginia, when a charter bus traveling from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, failed to slow for a roadwork zone and struck a Chevrolet Suburban operated by Priscilla R. Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts. The force of the impact pushed Mafalda’s SUV into an Acura carrying Dmitri Doncev, 45, a nurse at Holyoke Medical Center, along with his wife Ecaterina Doncev, 44, and their two children, Emily, 13, and Mark, 7, all of Greenfield, Massachusetts — who were traveling to a wedding in South Carolina.
All five Massachusetts residents were killed; the Doncev family’s Acura caught fire following the collision, and 34 additional passengers and motorists were injured and transported to area hospitals.
Virginia State Police charged bus driver Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, and authorities have indicated that additional charges are pending. Dong obtained his commercial driver’s license in 2024. Full details are developing.
