Narrative
On Friday, May 28, 2026, at approximately 2:35 a.m., a passenger bus operated by Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, failed to slow as traffic queued in a work zone on Interstate 95 southbound in Stafford County, Virginia, approximately 45 miles south of Washington, D.C. The bus struck a Chevrolet Suburban at speed, which was then forced into an Acura SUV and nearby vehicles, causing the Acura to catch fire.
Five people were killed — four in the burning Acura, including two children from Greenfield, Massachusetts, and one in the Suburban, identified as Priscilla R. Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts. Forty-four others were hospitalized, with three sustaining critical injuries.
Dong was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter with additional charges pending; the NTSB is investigating possible factors including driver fatigue, impairment, mechanical failure, and work zone conditions. Full details are developing.
