Narrative
At approximately 2:35 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2026, a passenger bus traveling southbound on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia — approximately 45 miles south of Washington, D.C. — failed to slow for a work zone and struck a Chevrolet Suburban, triggering a massive multi-vehicle chain reaction crash. The Suburban was forced into an Acura SUV and other vehicles, and the Acura subsequently caught fire. The bus was en route from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, and was carrying approximately 34 passengers at the time of the crash.
Five people were killed in the crash. Four fatalities occurred inside the Acura SUV: a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy, all residents of Greenfield, Massachusetts. A fifth victim, a 25-year-old woman, was killed inside the Chevrolet Suburban. Forty-four people were transported to area hospitals, including three with critical injuries. Bus driver Jing S. Dong, 48, also sustained injuries.
Charges are pending against the bus driver; federal investigators are reviewing Dong’s commercial driver’s license and training records. Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Transportation responded to the scene, which temporarily closed all lanes of I-95 before reopening. Full details are developing.
