Narrative
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 495 near Exit 36 in Plainville, Massachusetts, in which a car overturned and caught fire with two occupants trapped inside. Off-duty Ashland Fire Lieutenant David Iarussi, who was traveling northbound on I-495 with his wife after attending a wedding in Rhode Island, came upon the scene and immediately responded.
With no firefighting tools available, Lt. Iarussi used a rock to break the vehicle’s windshield and, assisted by bystanders and two Massachusetts State Police troopers, successfully pulled both trapped occupants — a woman and a man — from the burning vehicle. The condition of the two rescued individuals has not been publicly updated.
The cause of the single-vehicle crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police. Full details are developing.
