Narrative
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, just after 2:00 a.m., Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, was traveling northbound on Route 1 near the Saugus/Lynnfield line after his shift ended when he heard reports of a wrong-way driver and moved to intercept the threat. His cruiser was struck head-on by a Jeep operated by Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, who was traveling southbound in a northbound lane.
Trooper Trainor was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was later pronounced dead. Hernan Marrero was pronounced dead at the scene. Both occupants — one per vehicle — were fatally injured as a result of the head-on impact.
