Narrative

At approximately 2:03 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, age 30, was fatally struck on Route 1 in Saugus when a Jeep operated by Hernan Marrero, 50, of Boston, collided head-on with Trainor’s cruiser while traveling the wrong way. Trooper Trainor had responded just two minutes earlier to a report of a wrong-way driver on Route 1 in the Lynnfield area. State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble stated that Trainor’s actions prevented greater tragedy, saying, “His actions saved lives today.”

Trooper Trainor was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Hernan Marrero was pronounced dead at the scene. Both fatalities were confirmed by the Massachusetts State Police. Trainor, a trooper since 2023, is survived by his fiancée, mother, siblings, and extended family.

The crash remains under active investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. The cause of Marrero’s wrong-way driving has not been released. Full details are developing.
