Narrative

Just after 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, was fatally injured when his cruiser was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver on Route 1 north near the Saugus/Lynnfield line in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Trooper Trainor, assigned to the Danvers barracks, had just finished his shift and was preparing to travel home when 911 calls came in reporting a silver Jeep operated by Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

Trooper Trainor’s cruiser was struck by the Jeep in a violent head-on impact. Trainor was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was later pronounced dead. Marrero was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the U.S. and Massachusetts flags were lowered to half-staff at the Danvers barracks in honor of Trooper Trainor, a three-year veteran of the State Police and former corrections officer with the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash was investigated by Massachusetts State Police for more than six hours, causing significant delays to the morning commute. The Essex County District Attorney’s Office is involved in the investigation. Full details are developing.
