At approximately 2:03 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, age 30, responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on Route 1 in the Saugus area after a call came in at 2:01 a.m. — just one minute after his shift was scheduled to end. Within two minutes of the call, a Jeep operated by Hernan Marrero, 50, of Boston, traveling the wrong way on Route 1, collided head-on with Trooper Trainor’s cruiser.

Trooper Trainor was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. Hernan Marrero was pronounced dead at the scene. State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble credited Trooper Trainor with preventing a greater tragedy, stating, “His actions saved lives today.”

The crash remains under active investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. The reason Marrero was traveling the wrong way has not yet been determined. Full details are developing.
