Narrative

On May 6, 2026, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a Massachusetts State Police trooper assigned to the Danvers barracks was fatally struck on Route 1 near the Saugus/Lynnfield line in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, when a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in a northbound lane collided head-on with his responding cruiser. The trooper had been dispatched in response to reports of the wrong-way driver on the roadway at the time of the crash.

Both individuals sustained fatal injuries — the trooper was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he was later pronounced dead, while the wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Video from the scene showed the trooper’s SUV and a Jeep sustaining heavy damage. Neither victim’s name had been released as of the time of this report.

Massachusetts State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble and multiple members of the department gathered at the hospital in the hours following the crash. Route 1 northbound was closed at Walnut Street for several hours while investigators gathered evidence and crews removed the vehicles. Full details are developing.
