Narrative
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a Massachusetts State Police trooper was fatally injured in a head-on crash on Route 1 northbound in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, when an unidentified wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes struck the trooper’s responding cruiser.
The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to those injuries. The crash involved two vehicles — a State Police SUV and a Jeep. Route 1 northbound was closed at Walnut Street in Saugus for approximately six hours before all lanes reopened around 8:00 a.m.
