Narrative
At approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1 near the Saugus/Lynnfield line struck a responding Massachusetts State Police cruiser, causing a serious two-vehicle collision.
The State Police trooper, assigned to the Danvers barracks, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with life-threatening injuries. The wrong-way driver, operating a Jeep, was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither party has been publicly identified. Massachusetts State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble and several department members responded to the hospital following the crash.
