Narrative
In the early morning hours of May 6, 2026, just after 2:00 a.m., Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, was fatally struck by a wrong-way driver on Route 1 northbound in Lynnfield, MA. Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, entered the northbound lanes traveling southbound after passing through a jug handle in Peabody, ignoring clearly posted “WRONG WAY” and “DO NOT ENTER” signs, and traveled approximately 1.8 miles before colliding with Trooper Trainor’s cruiser at roughly 60 mph.
Both Marrero and Trooper Trainor were killed in the collision. A report released July 15, 2026 by Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker revealed that Marrero had consumed a total of ten alcoholic drinks prior to the crash — nine of them at Tribu Mexican Kitchen and Bar in Saugus — and had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.192, more than twice the legal limit in Massachusetts.
The Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission has issued notice to Tribu alleging multiple violations, with a hearing scheduled for July 28, 2026; the district attorney determined criminal charges against the restaurant were not sustainable. Full details are developing.
