Narrative
In the early morning hours of May 6, 2026, just after 2:00 a.m., Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, entered Route 1 Northbound in Lynnfield traveling southbound in the wrong direction after making a U-turn at a jug handle in Peabody, ignoring clearly posted “WRONG WAY” and “DO NOT ENTER” signs. Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, who had just finished his shift, heard a radio broadcast about the wrong-way driver and moved to intercept him before the inevitable collision.
Marrero’s Jeep struck Trooper Trainor’s cruiser head-on at approximately 60 mph after traveling 1.8 miles in the wrong direction. Both men were killed. A subsequent toxicology report revealed Marrero’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.192 — more than twice the legal limit — after consuming ten alcoholic drinks, nine of which were served to him at Tribu Mexican Kitchen and Bar in Saugus between 9:20 p.m. and 12:53 a.m.
